Finally, FINALLY, word is getting around and some research is being done on something I have been experiencing for the last 10 years: Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER). It was first being called "Depressive Milk Ejection Reflex" but on further study there are women who have it who do not fit the "depressive" label but are more on the "anxious" side, hence the change to "dysphoric". Basically, D-MER is a sensation of depression and/or anxiety when the baby latches on and starts nursing. It typically goes away a short time after let-down. It is definitely muti-faceted though, which can be seen in the results of a survey on the D-MER website.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I experienced this but thought it was due to me being a bad person or perhaps because of my c-section. I only just now learned that other mothers have it too!!! What an amazing thing!!! So thank you again!
Unfortunately, on top of this feeling I also had a child who hated breastfeeding (after having been bottlefed in Intensive Care) and I produced almost no milk. So although I'd always just assumed I'd breastfeed it was a doomed venture. Oh boy was I made to feel ashamed though. You have lightened my heart on one aspect of it. Have I said thanks? :-)
Oh Patience I could just hug you! My firstborn hated nursing too (we realized later it was due to multiple food allergies) - I understand your pain!
